Benefits of Lawn Rolling:

Most obvious is it flattens your lawn from any heaves ice forming may have caused and flattens these out.
Rolling also a good time of year with the lawns being softer to optimize the effects of this getting rid of any other natural occurring unevenness in the lawn. 
Rolling also presses much of the root structure back in to the substrate below it ensuring a stronger more healthy lawn.
With the freeze thaw cycle lifting turf in many locations of a lawn rolling ensures it is properly back in place allowing the lawn proper up take of nutrients and water and also make it more durable to heavy machinery passing across it and day to day foot traffic.
Any seed sowed during the fall is also pressed back into the soft soil when rolled in the spring.
